our story

It Takes a Village to Educate a Child (TAVTEC) was founded by Sonia Marshall-Brown, inspired by her experiences as a mother of two children who learn differently and love STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math). Through STEAM and "disguised learning," TAVTEC helps clients build essential social and life skills in a supportive, engaging environment. At its founding, few programs focused on developing social skills, despite the fact that around 70% of individuals with disabilities experience loneliness and social isolation. Sonia created TAVTEC to fill this gap. Families of children with disabilities often face social isolation, financial hardship, and higher divorce rates. TAVTEC’s mission is twofold: to create equitable opportunities for individuals with autism and neurodivergent diagnoses and provide respite and support for parents and caregivers.
